Don’t Hire An Expensive Contractor! Use These Home Improvement Tips Instead!

By HomeDec Team

Making a few little repairs can majorly impact the value of your house. In fact, you can increase your resale value by thousands of dollars with some updates. Here are a few tips on home improvement that will allow you to begin your project with confidence.

When you are installing new cabinets yourself. Start with the top set first. This way you will have plenty of room underneath to stand and navigate as you hang the top ones. The bottom set are much easier to install as there is no holding up a heavy cabinet while it gets screwed in.

If every method you’ve used to fix your squeaky door has failed, you may need to replace your door’s hinge. It’s easy to buy door hinges at any home improvement center. Simply disassemble the hinge and attach each side of it to the door and wall frame. Put the hinge together by sliding in the pin.

If you are looking for a functional home improvement project, try “building up.” Walls create a lot of wasted space. Add matching bookcases in your living room or build a window seat where your family can sit and read. Simple projects like these can make every space in your home usable and valuable to your family.

If you are working in the kitchen and bathroom during your home improvement project, make sure to turn off the water. Find the shutoff for water in your home before you begin any kind of work on rooms that use water. Taking this step helps to prevent flooding.

Smoke detectors are required for safety in your home. Many homes only put them in certain areas. You can increase the safety in your home, by installing additional detectors in places like bathrooms, kitchens and basements. These areas can sometimes be overlooked, though prone to fires as much or more than the rest of the house.

If you have kids, you know that they like to color and leave their coloring books and crayons lying around. You can simply organize them with a dish drying rack. Purchase a dish drying rack and stack your kid’s coloring books between the dish prongs and insert the crayons or markers into the utensil caddy space.

Throw your plastic shower curtain in the wash! Add a few clothes so they will swirl around with it and give it a good scrubbing. Even the most inexpensive shower curtains will survive one or two washings. You keep them out of the landfill and at the same time brighten up that tired bathroom!

If you are bored with your home or find yourself running out of space, consider a renovation before simply deciding to move. When you renovate your home, you can make it just the way you want it, instead of moving into a property designed by someone else. A renovation is also usually less costly and stressful than buying a new home.

Do-it-yourself hardwood floor installation is especially tempting for homeowners who want to save money by tackling the project on their own. This is fine for most faux-wood kits but if you are using actual wood that must be sanded first, it may be best to hire a professional to handle the sanding. Real wood is quite expensive, and even the smallest sanding goof can ruin the flooring.

Now you know that improving your home is not that hard. Your tasks will go more smoothly if you take some time to make a list of the steps necessary to complete the job. Try some of the things you’ve just learned to increase your home’s value.
